A 60-acre plot in WUSTL’s Tyson Research Center has been named a Forest Global Earth Observatory, or ForestGEO. The oak-hickory forest in the Ozarks joins a network of 51 long-term forest study sites in 23 countries, including eight others in the U.S. Together, the forests comprise the largest systematically studied network of forest-ecology plots in the world.

Epidemiologists have designed a better method to quantify a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer, according to Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, at the School of Medicine. The model could help identify women at high risk of breast cancer who may benefit from prevention strategies that reduce the chances of developing the disease.

The Active-Learning Classroom (ALC) opened in fall 2012 in Eads Hall as a pilot program, jointly sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences and The Teaching Center. The classroom is a highly flexible space that allows for student collaboration and class discussions. It has been such a success that leaders hope more such classrooms can be designed.

The hope was to repair a friendship. The result was a masterwork. The St. Louis Symphony’s Bjorn Ranheim and Shawn Weil will join the Washington University Symphony Orchestra tonight, Dec. 9, for a performance of Johannes Brahms’ “Double Concerto in A for Violin and Cello.”
